Here’s something we think you should know!

Today sees the launch of the new Channel 4 daytime quiz show, 1001 Things You Should Know, and as the Agency who designed and developed, the brand, titles, studio graphics and elements of the set, we were all keen to watch the first episode … despite being in the office!

Well done to the lovely team at Thames Scotland and fingers and toes crossed that the show picks up a lots of viewers!

H&M advertising Campaign gets adbusted.

A new H&M ad campaign featuring model Isabeli Fontana, shown with a deep mahogany tan while wearing a collection of swimsuits, has angered doctors and health officials who believe ‘young people exposed to the images will try and imitate the unhealthy look’. True, but we think in most parts of the
UK its been going on for years, so there’s nothing new there – You should see Sauchiehall Street on a Saturday evening!

However, what makes this whole campaign so worrying is that the retailer defended the ads by saying they used Isabeli Fontana as ‘her darker skin colour was the best way to showcase the strong colours’ of the season, but images from runway shows show the model with a markedly lighter skin tone than the one featured in the adverts.

So, with the evidence we have before us, are the masses presented with wonders of the photoshop treatment yet again – I think we are and so does the Guerrilla street artist who placed the Photoshop Tool pallet on the 48 sheets, 6 sheets throughout his city. A very intelligent and subtle piece of work.

Maybe we should move this on further, design a new jewellery range. Necklaces, bracelets. Replace the charm for the Photoshop Tool Pallet. There
is so much fakery in our lives today, just put yourself through 30min of The Only Way Is Essex!

A toast to the Queen…

Whether you love it or hate it, you will probably find yourself buying it for the novelty factor!

Unilever, the manufacturer of British-made spread ‘Marmite’ has created a limited edition jar branded ‘Ma’amite’ to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. And it’s not just the name that has changed. The usual yellow, red and white branding has been changed to reflect all things British, incorporating the Union Jack flag and replacing the iconic spoon with a crown. They have also changed the colour of the lid to fit in with the rest of the packaging.

Ma’amite can be bought from marmiteshop.co.uk from Monday 30th of April, and will be available from all good High Street supermarkets. We will definitely be buying a few jars for the studio!

Message on a bun…

Wimpy in South Africa have come up with a fantastic campaign in order to promote the fact that they have Braille menus. Using food as a way of sending their message, they used strategically placed sesame seeds in order to produce a Braille message for their visually impaired customers. The message on the bun let customers know exactly what they were about to eat. This was a clever way for the brand to show that they cater for everyone.

A window into the future…

Maryhill Burgh Hall is a newly refurbished community hall in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. The complex has been there since the 1800’s and is being put to good use by the locals.

However, this long-standing building is not a shrine to the past. Whilst playing homage to its roots the Maryhill Burgh Hall is also a sign of times to come as it features the world’s first interactive stained glass window!

Whilst admiring the beautiful stained glass throughout the building, you will find a QR Code, which you can scan with your smart phone and discover some historical Maryhill-related facts.

This modern interpretation of a history lesson is well worth checking out if you happen to be in the area.

Wikipedia Blackout

We often listen to BBC Radio 2 here in the office, and from time-to-time along comes a song that baffles us and gets us talking. Having got caught up in a discussion about a song in which the man was singing about a cake melting in the rain (at least that’s what we think he said), we went online for answers.

As per usual good old Wikipedia was consulted for answers…nothing. We were left in the dark about the bizarre song, literally!

Through the medium of the English version of their site,  Wikipedia have executed a blackout in order to protest against internet privacy laws in the US.

The holding page in place runs with the headline of, ‘Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge’.

Quite a big day in terms of internet privacy and censorship laws. It will be interesting to see how the English-speaking world reacts.

Anyway, best be off, we need to find an alternative place for information! Any suggestions welcome.

Yours,

The Blogging Brain Cell.

Thought of the day…

The Death of Direct Mail?

Well thought out and executed Direct Mail is a beautiful thing. Lets hope the planned rise in the cost of stamps from Royal Mail doesn’t put an end this method of communication.
